Tony, son of one of the wealthiest business tycoons in New York City, falls in love with Alice, a simple secretary girl, and they want to get married. However, the eccentric behavior of the bride-to-be’s relatives and friends leads Tony's parents to believe that there might be something wrong with their mental state. Their home is essentially a club for “urban eccentrics.”
Alice's mother, Penny, writes plays because once a typewriter was mistakenly delivered to their house. Her talentless sister Essie dreams of ballet and takes dance lessons from a crazy Russian named Potap Kolenkov, who doesn't mind dining at someone else's expense. Alice's dad and her friends spend all their time making fireworks and launching them right inside the house.
But no one stands out more than grandpa, whose refusal to pay taxes stems from principled convictions. This whole pandemonium shouts, sings, dances, and jumps simultaneously, accompanied by grandpa's harmonica and Essie's husband's xylophone, disrupting the big business operations of Anthony P. Kirby Corporation — Tony's father.
