Höstsonaten

Eva, the wife of a village pastor, invites her mother Charlotte to visit, whom she hasn't seen for seven years. Her mother is a world-famous pianist, talented but egotistical, aging, and has outlived several husbands. Eva is not as gifted as her mother, although she also plays piano well and has written two books; however, her main calling is being a homemaker, wife, mother, and loving sister. Despite this, everything in her life turns out unhappily: she deeply respects her husband but does not truly love him, their son drowned at the age of four, and her mother never loved her either. Eva takes her sick sister Helena from the hospital, who suffers from paralysis and whose speech only Eva understands.
