The film's protagonists find themselves in Shangri-La, a mythical land revered by enthusiasts of esoteric knowledge. According to them, humanity's spiritual center lies hidden in the heart of the Himalayas, in a region unmarked on maps and practically inaccessible since we are not yet ready to properly harness its concentrated energy and information.
Robert Conway, a British diplomat and idealistic dreamer, boards the last flight out of China engulfed in revolutionary flames. Accompanying him is a motley crew of fellow passengers: his younger brother, an eccentric paleontologist, a swindler, and a prostitute. The pilot changes course and lands the plane in the snows of Tibet. Mysterious monks guide the travelers through secret paths into a warm, fertile valley adorned with magnificent marble statues, gardens, and terraces, ruled by the Supreme Lama.
